Unit 7

Operations, Logistics and Quality Assurance in the Aroma Trades

This module focuses on the key issues involved in the aroma trade manufacturing processes. Covering two distinct areas: Operations and Logistics and Quality Management, the module will consider the aroma trades value chain in its entirety.

This will give you an in-depth look into the growing and production of essential oils and aroma extracts, the compounding of flavours and fragrances, as well as the production of the product they’re used in and the quality control that’s used before they reach the market.

Operations and Logistics will cover the many issues in the management of a multi-product aroma materials network. You’ll learn about the concerns affecting the maximisation of profitability, and explore the different issues involving the management of ‘made to order’ and ‘made for stock’ products, and inventory management.

Quality Management will cover various quality assurance theories, tools and documentation used from the laboratory to the marketplace and beyond. This includes in-depth exploration of sampling methods, the dilution of natural aroma materials, odour control and management, and organoleptic/sensory assessment and issues affecting its management and effectiveness.

You’ll also look into the industry’s standards for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and the implications of ISO 9000 quality management systems standards.
