Unit 6
Safety, Regulatory and Environmental Issues in the Aroma Trades
This in-depth module will give you a comprehensive overview of the environmental factors that can influence flavour and fragrance creation. It will provide the detailed theory you need to understand and apply key safety assessments, as well as familiarising you with wide-reaching industry regulations such as IFRA and REACH.
Alongside these substantial areas of study, you’ll learn about safety concerns surrounding the ways in which fragrances and flavours might be deemed ‘unsafe’ to consumers, as well as the legislation and guidelines that protect both them, and the industry.
You’ll look into the many ethical and environmental concerns that affect the industry, including focus on organic aroma materials, nature identical and synthetic aroma materials, cruelty-free and Fair Trade certifications.
There will also be discussion on how environmental impact needs to measured along the entire value chain, from the growing of aromatic plants, how they’re processed and transported, compounded, and used by consumers, through to the environmental fate of fragranced and flavoured products.

“The Aroma Trade has become a heavily regulated industry sector. A failure in regulatory compliance can be expensive both in financial penalties and loss of reputation. The issue affects a company in any part of the sector value chain and cost-effective management of regulatory affairs is a key strategic advantage in the industry.”
— Dr Tony Curtis, ICATS Principal Tutor
