Unit 12

Research Methods and Dissertation Proposal

Under tutor guidance as part of the full Diploma course, this penultimate module will give you the opportunity to undertake detailed, Masters-level research. This can be technical, creative, historical, economic, or business-focussed as long as it’s relevant to your organisation.

Throughout the module, you’ll get the assistance you need in selecting the most appropriate topic for your dissertation with substantial input from your ICATS tutor. They’ll advise on suitable areas of study that are relevant to you, as well as offering their guidance on key issues that may affect your choice of topic.

Working with your ICATS tutor, you’ll be able to get the answers you need, such as whether the information required for the study can be sourced easily, is the subject too narrow or conversely, too broad, and will it be of sufficient depth for this level of study?

This crucial module will give you a solid grounding in primary and secondary research methods and the necessary skills to complete your full thesis with sufficient critical insight.

“For graduates, the ‘icing on the cake’ is the dissertation phase. Having explored the full dimensions of Aroma Trades Studies, thereby gaining global knowledge and skills for our industry from the taught modules, the dissertation allows the individual to explore an area of deep personal interest and of relevance to their sponsor with passion. This is totally in keeping with the ethos of the IFEAT /ICATS course, by adding capability to the professional and value to the organisation.”

— Dr Tony Curtis, ICATS Principal Tutor
